Founder of The Common Thread

I’m originally from San Francisco and moved to St. Pete in 2022, trading gray skies and steep hills for sunshine, flat bike rides, and a whole lot more color.

I first learned to crochet in 5th grade from a kindly old man on a long train ride—he showed me a few basic stitches to pass the time, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

These days, I’m an advanced crocheter and a certified instructor through the American Crochet Association, but at my core, I just really love making things with yarn and helping others discover the joy in it too (don’t ask about my knitting... I’m practicing).

Hi, I’m Shannon 👋

I’m opening The Common Thread because, honestly, I love shopping for yarn—and I was surprised to find there wasn’t a local yarn shop in St. Pete, a city known for its vibrant arts scene. I also believe people could use more third spaces: places that aren’t home or work, where people can slow down, connect, and create. So I decided to build one.

My friends back in California think I’m a little nuts for opening a yarn shop in Florida of all places—but the truth is, St. Pete is full of creative, curious people, and I think our community is more than ready for something like this.

We’re also building a full-service café inside the shop, serving coffee, tea, and sparkling refreshments—because we love a good sip ’n stitch.

The Common Thread is a dream that’s been growing in my heart for a long time. I wanted to create a true fiber arts playground: a space that feels welcoming, cozy, and full of color, where fiber lovers of all kinds can come together to learn, create, and build community. I’ve worked hard to stock the shop with yarns that feel good in your hands and come from a wide range of diverse, thoughtful makers.

Whether you’re brand new to crafting or you’ve got years of projects under your belt, I hope you’ll feel right at home here. Come say hi, sip a coffee, and let’s make something beautiful together. 💛
