About Us
The Common Thread is St. Petersburg’s yarn shop + café and creative community space, where people come to enjoy great coffee, discover beautiful fiber arts supplies, learn new skills, and connect with other creative people.
We’re a new and dynamic small business, which means there’s plenty of opportunity for our team members to contribute their talents, share ideas, and make an impact on both the direction of our shop and the broader St. Pete arts community.
The Role
We’re looking for an experienced part-time barista who is friendly, dependable, comfortable working independently, and genuinely enjoys connecting with people.
Our café is an important part of The Common Thread experience. You’ll prepare drinks, welcome customers into the space, keep the café running smoothly, and help create the warm, creative atmosphere our community knows us for.
Regular schedule:
Wednesdays & Thursdays • 10AM–2PM
Fridays • 5–9PM
Additional shifts may occasionally be available to help cover special events, busy periods, or employee absences.
What You’ll Do
Prepare espresso drinks, coffee, tea, and seasonal specialty beverages with consistency and care.
Provide friendly, attentive customer service and help create a welcoming environment.
Operate the register and assist customers with café purchases.
Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked café workspace.
Complete opening, closing, and routine café tasks as needed.
Help us create a fun, inviting space where customers want to spend time.
Pitch in during community events and special programming as needed.
Bring your own creativity, interests, and ideas to the role.
What We’re Looking For
Previous barista experience required.
Experience preparing espresso-based beverages and working with commercial café equipment.
Friendly, outgoing, and comfortable interacting with customers.
Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently.
Strong attention to cleanliness and organization.
Comfortable working in a small, community-focused business where everyone pitches in.
Availability for our regular Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday shifts.
Bonus points if you have experience or interest in:
Knitting, crochet, or other fiber arts.
Social media and content creation.
Community outreach and events.
Visual merchandising, decorating, or making spaces look beautiful.
Art, craft, or the broader St. Pete creative community.

🧶 Now Hiring: Part-Time Yarnista
About Us
The Common Thread is St. Petersburg’s yarn shop + café and creative community space, where fiber lovers of all levels come to connect, learn, create, and discover beautiful yarns and tools.
We’re looking for a part-time Yarnista to join our team for the fall season, with the possibility of extending into a longer-term position.
This is a great fit for someone who has deep fiber arts knowledge, genuinely loves people, and gets excited about helping someone find exactly the right yarn, tool, pattern, or next project.
The Role
Our Yarnistas are the heart of the retail experience at The Common Thread. You’ll welcome customers, answer questions, help troubleshoot projects, recommend yarns and tools, process new inventory, create store samples, merchandise the shop, and help keep our space beautiful and inviting.
This is a part-time position starting at approximately 5–10 hours per week, with the potential for additional hours as needed.
Applicants must have weekend availability as well as some weekday morning availability.
What You’ll Do
Greet and engage with every person who walks through our doors.
Help customers select yarns, tools, patterns, and supplies for their projects.
Answer questions about knitting, crochet, fibers, gauge, yarn substitutions, and other common project needs.
Help customers navigate resources like Ravelry.
Learn our inventory and confidently make product recommendations.
Process, price, organize, and put away incoming inventory.
Create store samples based on direction from leadership.
Help merchandise displays and keep the shop visually inviting.
Keep the retail floor clean, organized, stocked, and ready for customers.
Support events and our broader fiber arts community as needed.
Contribute ideas and help us continue making The Common Thread a special place to spend time.
What We’re Looking For
Mastery of either knitting or crochet; ideally both.
Firsthand experience working with a variety of animal- and plant-based fibers and an understanding of how fiber content affects the finished project.
Strong working knowledge of knitting and/or crochet tools, terminology, patterns, gauge, yarn weights, and substitutions.
Familiarity and comfort with Ravelry.com and other common fiber arts resources.
A genuine understanding of and enthusiasm for fiber arts culture.
An extroverted, warm, and approachable personality. You should be someone who enjoys starting conversations and making people feel welcome.
Strong customer service instincts and the ability to meet customers wherever they are, from someone buying their very first skein to an experienced maker looking for something specific.
Reliability, attention to detail, and willingness to pitch in wherever needed.
Weekend availability and some weekday morning availability.
Bonus points if you:
Knit and crochet confidently.
Have previous yarn shop, craft retail, or specialty retail experience.
Have teaching or fiber arts instruction experience.
Enjoy visual merchandising and creating beautiful displays.
Can create engaging social media photos, videos, Reels, or other content.
Are already connected to the local fiber arts or creative community.

Some days you'll be helping someone choose yarn for their first sweater; other days you'll be unpacking boxes, reorganizing a display, weaving in ends on a shop sample, cleaning up the retail floor, or jumping into whatever needs doing.
