Ready to take your knitting skills to the next level? Lace knitting might look intricate and intimidating, but getting started is more approachable than you think.
In this beginner-friendly workshop, instructor Elizabeth Margaret will guide you through the fundamentals of lace using a custom design created just for this class: Your First Lace Scarf. During class we’ll cover:
German Twisted Cast-On
Lace increases and decreases
Reading and working simple lace stitches
Tips for tracking patterns and fixing mistakes
You’ll begin knitting your scarf in class with plenty of hands-on guidance throughout. Questions are always encouraged, and Elizabeth will be there to support you every step of the way so you leave feeling confident continuing at home.
Materials Needed
1 skein Fingering Weight yarn*
US Size 4 knitting needles (or similar size)
*100g / approx. 400 yards recommended
We suggest Noro Sonata (6 colors available at The Common Thread). This fiber blend creates a light, airy fabric with a touch of elasticity that’s ideal for learning lace.
If substituting yarn, look for wool, cotton blends, or silk blends with a slightly “springy” feel. Pure silk or 100% plant fibers can be more challenging for beginners when working lace.
(2 skeins recommended if you’d like to make a longer scarf, though 1 skein is perfect for practice.)
Prerequisites
Participants should be comfortable with:
Knit stitch
Purl stitch
Slipping stitches
If you’re ready to move beyond basics and try something new, this is the perfect next step into the world of lace knitting.
About the Instructor:
Elizabeth Margaret is a St. Pete local by way of NYC and the designer behind One Wild Designs. She’s been knitting and crocheting since childhood and has published over 50 patterns since 2020. Elizabeth has taught technique and fit workshops in yarn shops across the country and online, helping makers of all levels feel more confident in their craft.
